Most people who call at your home will be genuine, but sometimes someone will turn up unannounced with the intention of tricking their way into your home.  Apart from the wide range of secure locking devices there are 2 very reasonably priced security devices available through Neighbourhood Watch and Braintree Police which will make your home more secure:-

Door Viewer (spy hole): These can be fitted in the door at eye-level, enabling you to see the person standing outside the door.  The cost of a Spy Viewer is £1.50.

Door chain or door bars: These can be fixed on the inside of your front door.  They should be kept on at all times, so that when you answer the door you can keep the door chain on while you ask for proof of identity or ask the caller to put proof of identity through the letter box.  If you are still unsure, keep the chain on while you check their identity - telephoning the company they say that they are from - getting the number from the phone book rather than the number which they have given you.  You can shut the door while you telephone.  Only when you are completely satisfied that they are genuine can you release the door chain.  The cost of a door chain is £2.50.
